Early Childhood Years and Kindergarten: ages 3 - 7.
The Lakota Waldorf Kindergarten and 1st – 8th grade school is a tuition free Waldorf school serving the children of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
Our Waldorf Early Childhood and Kindergarten Program provides a nurturing rhythmic environment with daily, weekly, and seasonal activities that build a sense of order and security that is essential to the healthy development of young children. The classroom is warm and comforting. Activities are focused on creative play and practical skill development like cooking and cleaning. The program also fosters the cultivation of imagination and creativity through storytelling and artistic projects such as modeling with beeswax, felting, watercolor painting, sculpture, woodcarving, and music. Outdoor playtime is scheduled every day and includes activities that develop a connection to nature. The children in kindergarten learn the Lakota Language in a very playful way, they sing Lakota songs, Lakota verses and through this are exposed to the sound and melody of the language. Thus, the foundation is laid for them to dive deeper into Lakota language learning as they enter the 1st grade.
